Position Overview:

The Political and Public Affairs Officer will report to the Manager of the Foreign Policy and Diplomacy Program (FPDS). Key responsibilities include providing political and economic advice and analysis, organizing advocacy activities (including cultural events), facilitating access to key interlocutors and decision-makers, and supporting official visits, often in partnership with other High Commission programs. citeturn0search0

Key Duties:

  1. Advocacy and Event Planning: Design, plan, and implement initiatives to advance Canadian priorities in areas such as human rights, democracy, rule of law, good governance, peace and security, and gender equality.
  2. Advice and Analysis: Gather information to prepare high-quality analytical advice and reporting on emerging domestic and regional socio-economic, political, foreign policy, and regional dynamics in line with Canadian interests.
  3. Networking: Liaise with partners and stakeholders to expand and maintain the High Commission’s network. Coordinate engagement with political, cultural, academic, media, and civil society organizations to advance the High Commission’s priorities.
  4. Media Engagement: Support efforts to publicize events, advocacy campaigns, and messaging through strategic communication in traditional and social media.
  5. Official Visits: Plan, coordinate, and manage official visits and events to advance program objectives for the High Commission.
  6. Other Duties: Perform additional duties as required.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in a relevant discipline such as Political Science, Law, Journalism/Communications, International Relations, Economics, Public Administration, or an acceptable combination of education, training, and work experience in a field relevant to the position.
  • Language Proficiency: Advanced fluency in English and Bangla (oral and written).
  • Experience: A minimum of 4 years of recent work experience with an internationally focused organization, including government, private sector, or multilateral organizations. Experience should include providing strategic advice, briefings, and written reports to management and/or clients; using social media tools for event promotion, branding, and advocacy initiatives; planning events or project management, including working with partners and/or media; and building strategic alliances and cultivating a diverse network of contacts.

Rated Requirements:

  • Knowledge: Current political, socio-economic, and security dynamics in Bangladesh and the region; key actors in Bangladesh’s political sphere; Canadian foreign policy priorities and engagement in Bangladesh and the region; proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and social media platforms; basic financial management related to programming.
  • Competencies: Focus on quality and details; initiative and action-oriented; resilience and adaptability; strategic thinking; judgment and discretion; teamwork and horizontal leadership.
  • Abilities: Prioritize, plan, and organize work under pressure with minimal supervision; conduct research and analysis; effective communication in English and Bangla; work individually and as part of a team in a multicultural environment; organize public affairs events.

Asset Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures of programs within the High Commission, such as Consular, Foreign Policy and Diplomacy, Development, Trade, and/or Common Services.
  • Work or study experience in Canada or another international setting.
  • Experience working in a diplomatic mission, international organization, international non-governmental organization, or local non-governmental organization.
  • Proficiency in graphic design and/or video editing software; experience using video recording and photography equipment.
  • Ability to communicate in French, Chittagonian, or Rohingya.

Operational Requirements:

  • Willingness to work in a high-pressure environment.
  • Flexibility with assigned duties and work hours.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours and overtime, with on-call availability outside normal business hours.
  • Availability and ability to travel if required.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Work Authorization: Ability to obtain and hold valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.
  • Security Screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level), which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.
